A major earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck the nation of Haiti on Tuesday 12 January.

More than 100,000 people are feared dead and millions more need urgent assistance. The quake is the most powerful to hit the Caribbean country in 200 years and is a devastating blow for Haitians, many of whom were already living below the poverty line.

Oxfam is there

Oxfam have a 100 strong team working in Haiti, including 15 emergency specialists. They are supporting rescue efforts, assessing the damage, providing shelter material for people who have lost their homes and responding with public health, water and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease. Oxfam also has links with a large network of community volunteers who can get aid to affected people quickly.
