You are an existing Westpac customer if you have any type of banking relationship with Westpac. This may include a transaction account, a credit card or loan.
If you are an existing customer, you have the option of entering your customer number. Your customer number is the eight digit number you use to sign in to Internet Banking and Telephone Banking. It can be found on the first page of your statement.
When you open a transaction or savings account, you have the option of providing us with your Tax File Number or Exemption. Collection of Tax File Numbers is authorised by tax law. Quotation is not compulsory, but withholding tax may be deducted from interest paid to your account if you do not quote your number or exemption. Note: If an account is opened in joint names, a minimum of two Tax File Numbers or Exemptions are required to deem an account to have quoted.
If you have not previously provided us with your Tax File Number, you may do so at a Westpac branch or by using Telephone Banking.
If you are an existing Westpac customer and have previously provided us with your Tax File Number, when opening your account/s, you may opt for the Tax File Number you have already provided to us to be applied to your new account, by selecting 'yes' on the online application. If you select 'yes', and we later confirm that you have not previously supplied us with your Tax File Number or are not eligible to re-use an existing Tax File Number, withholding tax may be deducted from interest paid to your account.
For more information about Tax File Numbers contact the Australian Taxation Office.
