Planning your trip and getting ready to travel

  • Keep an eye on the exchange rate for where you’re going regularly before you go – if the rate is in your favour you can lock it in with a travel money card
  • There are a few countries where Westpac Group cards can’t be used due to economic and trade sanctions (Cuba, Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Sudan and Syria). To arrange alternative payment options visit a Westpac branch.  Find out more
  • There are also some sanctioned jurisdictions where access to Westpac online services such as the Westpac App, Online Banking and Corporate Online are not available. ​See the full list of locations.
  • Always let us know when you’re travelling overseas and where you’re going. That way we’ll be able to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. 

How to notify us you’re going overseas

In the Westpac App

Before trying these instructions make sure you update to the latest version of the app.  
  1. ​Search Notify of overseas travel in the Smart Search bar
  2. Add travel dates, country and contact details
  3. Select your contact number and email while you’re away (optional)
  4. Tap Send notification

In Online Banking

  1. Go to Service > Services
  2. Select Notify going overseas under Card Services
  3. Select your departure and return dates
  4. Select the countries you’re travelling to
  5. Add your contact number and email while you’re away
  6. Select Notify going overseas


Or contact us by calling the number on the back of your card, or visiting your nearest branch

If you’re unable to access your Australian mobile number but you have a temporary overseas mobile number, let us know by calling the number on the back of your card.

Our Westpac Added Online Security Service protects you when you’re shopping online and you may need to receive a ‘One Time Password’ via SMS in order to verify your online transaction. This SMS can be received using your temporary overseas mobile number.

While you’re away

  • Getting cash out while you’re away? If you use an ATM from the Global ATM Alliance network, you won’t pay any ATM withdrawal fee. 1
  • Avoid paying 3% transaction fees when using either our Westpac Lite Credit Card 2, Flex Card or our Worldwide Wallet whilst abroad.
  • Use the Westpac App to easily manage any currencies you have on your travel money card on the go. 
  • If your card is lost or stolen while you’re away, you can lock it instantly in Online Banking or the Westpac App. You can call us from overseas to report your card lost or stolen 24/7 on  +612 9155 7700
  • Where possible, use a PIN instead of your signature to verify credit card purchases. Westpac credit cards are protected by CardShield™, which includes fraud detection, Online Protection and CHIP security features.

1. No ATM withdrawal fee at Westpac Group or select Westpac Group partner ATMs in Australia and Global ATM Alliance partners. Other fees and charges may be payable.  
2. A 3% Westpac Foreign Exchange Fee applies to overseas transactions in a currency other than a Supported Currency.
3. Complimentary insurance covers: AWP Australia Pty Ltd ABN 52 097 227 177 AFSL 245631, trading as Allianz Global Assistance (AGA), under a binder from the insurer, Allianz Australia Insurance Limited ABN 15 000 122 850 AFSL 234708 (Allianz), has issued an insurance group policy to Westpac Banking Corporation ABN 33 007 457 141 AFSL and Australian credit licence 233714 (Westpac) which allows eligible persons to claim under it as third party beneficiaries. Access to the benefit of cover under the Credit Card Complimentary Insurance is provided to eligible Westpac cardholders by operation of s48 of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth). If an eligible persons wishes to claim any of these benefits, they will be bound by the eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions contained in the  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy (PDF 349KB) /   Commercial Cards Insurance Policy (PDF 160KB) which may be amended from time to time. 4. Bonus interest: payable each month that you: make a deposit to the account, ensure the account balance is higher at the end than the beginning of the month, and keep the account balance above $0. For bonus interest qualification, a month is the period from close of business on the last business day of the prior month to close of business on the last business day of the current month.
