Westpac Scholars Trust awards $4 million in scholarships to 100 students nationwide
22 March 2023
Westpac Scholars Trust has awarded $4 million in scholarships to 100 outstanding university students, researchers and social entrepreneurs working in areas of sustainable growth, technology and innovation, social change, and developing stronger ties with Asia.
The recipients come from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations across Australia, including Cairns, Wollongong, Port Macquarie and Gisborne.
Among the list of scholars is a refugee migrant who launched a social enterprise to help others gain meaningful employment in construction, a PhD student investigating the potential for ancient microbial life on Mars, and an environmental economist investigating the cost of air pollution in Australia.
Reflecting on the selection of the 2023 cohort, Westpac Scholars Trust CEO, Amy Lyden, said: “I couldn't be more impressed with the calibre of scholars we've awarded this year.
“Many individuals are already delivering huge impact in our community through their studies, research and work in the social enterprise sector. I can’t wait to see this group continue to flourish."
The scholarships are delivered in partnership with 14 universities across Australia and provide financial support, leadership development training and networking opportunities to recipients. The 2023 cohort is comprised of 71 undergraduate students, 17 postgraduate students, 10 social entrepreneurs and two early-career researchers, who have collectively received over $4 million in funding.
