What network type should I connect to?

Pick the most suitable network option based on your business requirements when connecting your Presto terminal.

Benefits

  • Convenient: Wi-Fi connects devices to your network without any physical wired connection. So there’s greater flexibility.
  •  Extended range: since it’s not wired, you can use it wherever your Wi-Fi network range extends to. For example, it’s most suitable for the ’pay at table’ option in restaurants. It works with both VX690 and E355 terminals.
  • Back-up: if your network drops out, there’s 3G back-up (VX690 model only) built into the terminal so you can take payments in standalone mode (i.e. not integrated with your Point of Sale (POS)).

Things to Consider

  • A strong Wi-Fi network/signal: certain areas of your premises may require a Wi-Fi signal extender.
  • Recommended for private Wi-Fi networks only: Public Wi-Fi networks can have security and capacity settings that block payments software from accessing the network.

Tips

  • Boosting signal strength: make sure that your Wi-Fi signal strength can extend to all the areas of your premises where you wish to take payments. If you have weak signal strength in certain parts of your premises, consider getting a Wi-Fi signal extender.
  • Spare power socket: required for the base unit to be plugged in to.
  • Use a private Wi-Fi network:  this will ensure that you always have enough bandwidth to process transactions.

Benefits

  • Portable and mobile: The Mobile hotspot is perfect for businesses on the road and on the move. You can use it wherever you have a good mobile reception or signal.
  • Mobile range: It’s mobile - so it goes where you go. There are fewer restrictions.
  • Back-up: If your mobile network goes down there’s a 3G back-up (VX690 only) built in to the terminal that will allow you to take payments in standalone mode (i.e. not integrated with your POS).

Things to Consider

  • Mobile phone coverage: If the mobile network is weak, gets overloaded or goes down, it will affect your ability to take payments.
  • Back-up solution: If the mobile phone that you’re hot-spotting from uses the same network as the Telstra 3G back-up that’s built into the terminal - then you may have no backup solution. This also applies when using a portable wireless broadband modem - where the wireless broadband modem that you’re connected to is the same (Telstra).

Tips

  • Organise a 4G wireless broadband modem: Instead of using your mobile phone to hotspot from. 4G wireless broadband modems are likely to be more reliable than using your mobile phone. They generally allow for multiple terminals to be connected at once. They also provide a greater range and have a longer battery life (or can be plugged in to a power source directly).
  • Spare power socket: You will require a spare power socket for the base unit to be plugged in to.
