How to open a Westpac bank account

When you arrive

Find a home and a mobile provider.

You’ll need:

  • An Australian residential address
  • A mobile phone. 

You might want to start with a Westpac Choice everyday transaction account. You can open this account online or in-branch.

Your identification

You'll need 2 forms of ID to open a bank account with Westpac:

  • Passport
  • Driver licence with photo
  • Birth certificate
  • Medicare card

Save on bank fees

  • $0 Account-keeping fees

    For at least the first year on new accounts for eligible customers.

  • $0 Cash withdrawal fees within Australia

    In branch, from our ATMs and select partner ATMs. Plus, unlimited transactions and account enquiries. Fees may apply for withdrawals overseas.

  • $0 International transfer fees

    If you send foreign currency overseas using Online Banking or the Westpac App. Other fees may apply.

Pay no Account-keeping fee for the first 12 months (usually $5 per month). After this, the fee will continue to be waived for:

  • Customers that deposit at least $2,000 each month
  • Customers under the age of 30
  • Customers who are full-time tertiary students.

An everyday account, called a current or checking account in other countries, comes with a debit card. It’s great for getting paid, shopping online or in stores, and paying bills.

International students

This account has no monthly fees as they’re waived if you’re studying full-time. You can receive money from family overseas, pay for things you need, and use your debit card to shop online or in stores.
