Want to transfer your credit card balance and start saving on interest but wondering how to go about it? Follow these five simple steps to consolidate up to 3 cards with a balance transfer to a Westpac credit card:
- Choose the card that suits your needs
- Gather application details
- Include your balance transfer details in your application
- Apply online
- Activate your card
1. Choose the card that suits your needs
Remember that you’re signing up for a credit card and all the fees and commitments that entails, not just the associated balance transfer offer. When comparing balance transfer offers, check out all of the interest rates – for purchases and cash advances, as well as the balance transfer offer rate. Also take note of the annual card fee and whether there are any other fees to use the card, such as foreign transaction fees.
2. Gather application details
While you may be able to apply for most credit cards over the phone or in-branch, nothing beats the convenience of applying online. Before you apply, you will need:
- Documents to verify your identity – you canreview our verification checklist online (PDF 657KB).
- The card numbers of the credit cards you would like to transfer
- BPAY biller codes of the financial institutions that provide those cards – you can usually find these on recent statements
- Details about your income and expenses
- Employment details.
There may also be other documents you will need, depending on the requirements of the card issuer.
3. Include your balance transfer details in your application
Remember to include the amount of money you want to transfer when you apply in order to take advantage of any special offer. Do this for as many card balances as you want to consolidate, up to a limit of 3 non-Westpac issued credit cards (for new card applications).
4. Apply online
It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete a credit card application online, provided you have all of the necessary documents handy. Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll respond within 60 seconds to acknowledge receipt and give you some information about next steps.
5. Activate your card
Once you receive your new credit card, remember to follow the enclosed instructions to activate it (normally by going online or calling 1300 308 930).
Your approved balance transfer will be completed automatically once you’ve activated the card, but may take a few business days to appear.
Use your card wisely, and remember to make the most of the low balance transfer rate while it lasts. You might find our repayment tool SmartPlan helpful in paying your balance transfer down.
